Mikoshi no Takiabi Festival: Japan’s Only Mikoshi Waterfall Ritual

Nestled in the nature-rich town of Happo in Akita Prefecture, Shirataki Shrine is a charming local shrine known for its peaceful, secluded atmosphere. With no resident priests except during special festivals, the shrine feels like a hidden sanctuary tucked away in the forest.

The shrine’s most striking feature lies just behind it — a stunning 17-meter waterfall. In summer, the refreshing mist offers a welcome escape from the heat. In winter, the waterfall often freezes into dramatic icicles, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Shirataki Shrine is best known for its annual highlight: the Mikoshi no Takiabi Festival, where tradition takes a spectacular plunge into the waterfall.

A Summer Spectacle: The Mikoshi Waterfall Ritual

Every year on August 1st, Shirataki Shrine holds its annual festival. Starting at 7 a.m., local men dressed in white traditional clothing carry the mikoshi (portable shrine) through the town to pray for blessings.

The festival’s highlight comes around 1:30 p.m. when the mikoshi procession reaches the 17-meter Shirataki Waterfall behind the shrine. Amid chants of “Wasshoi! Wasshoi!”, participants rush with the mikoshi into the waterfall’s pool. The powerful cascade drenches them, creating a spectacular and unforgettable scene.

While standing under the waterfall, they pray for a bountiful harvest, safe voyages, and business prosperity.

This unique ritual reportedly began one hot summer when young carriers, seeking relief from the heat, jumped into the waterfall with the mikoshi. What started as a spontaneous act has since become a beloved local tradition, blending faith with refreshing fun.

The Mikoshi Waterfall Festival: Japan’s One and Only

Compared to many mikoshi festivals across Japan, the Mikoshi Waterfall Festival at Shirataki Shrine is truly one of a kind. Its rarity and powerful visual impact attract numerous photographers and travelers alike.

If you visit Akita in summer, consider waking early to experience this unique “Mikoshi Waterfall” event in Happo Town. It’s more than just a prayer ritual — it’s the coolest and most thrilling spectacle of the season.
