Finish your day of travel on northern Akita’s coastline. Sunsets over the Sea of Japan coupled with the Shirakami mountain range make for a picture perfect spot to unwind.
Kanoura Observatory
A great pit stop for those traveling along Route 101, see the Sea of Japan endlessly expand from this overlook. Try the area’s famous fried squid from one of the few restaurants and watch the sky turn shades of pink and orange as the sun sets. Free parking, picnic tables, and restrooms are available on-site.

Enjoy watching the sun go down as you walk along the sandy beach and dip your toes in the salty water. On a clear day, see the Shirakami Mountains and the Oga Peninsula in the distance. During the summer months, go early and grab a bite to eat at one of the seaside food shacks. Free parking and restrooms are available.
The Sand Craft in Mitane Festival is held at Kamayahama Beach every year in late July. See impressive works of sand sculptures scatter the beach.
