Located near the scenic coastline of northern Akita, Tomeyama Forest is a peaceful old-growth beech forest hidden within the foothills of the Shirakami Mountains. Conveniently accessible from Route 101, this quiet forest trail offers an easy way to experience the natural beauty of the Shirakami area.
The name “Tomeyama” comes from the Japanese word tome, meaning “to prohibit.” According to local history, logging in this forest was prohibited more than 300 years ago. Thanks to this long period of protection, the area still preserves beautiful old-growth beech forests today.
The Shirakami area is internationally known for having one of the world’s largest remaining virgin beech forests. Walking through Tomeyama allows visitors to experience part of this unique natural environment in a quiet and accessible setting.
Beginner-Friendly Forest Walk
Unlike some hiking trails deeper within Shirakami Sanchi, Tomeyama Forest is suitable for beginners and casual hikers. Parts of the trail include wooden boardwalks, and the route has very gentle elevation changes, making it an easy and relaxing nature walk.
Most guided walks can be completed in about one hour, making Tomeyama a perfect stop for travelers exploring Akita’s coastline or driving along Route 101.
To help preserve the forest environment, access is only available with a local guide. Tours can be arranged through the Happo Shirakami Guide Association.
Seasonal Beauty in Every Season
Tomeyama Forest offers different scenery throughout the year.
In spring and summer, fresh green leaves and cool mountain air create a refreshing atmosphere. In autumn, the beech forest turns vibrant shades of yellow and gold, attracting photographers and nature lovers alike.
The peaceful surroundings also make the forest an ideal place to enjoy birdwatching and quiet time in nature.
Visit Shirataki Shrine and Waterfall
Before reaching the forest, visitors can stop at Shirataki Shrine, a small local shrine surrounded by forest scenery. Behind the shrine, a beautiful waterfall flows through the mountains, adding to the tranquil atmosphere of the area.
