Hidden in the heart of Noshiro, Kaneyu is one of Akita’s most remarkable historic buildings. Originally built as an exclusive ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant), it showcases the beauty of Japanese architecture through magnificent natural Akita cedar, elegant interiors, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Today, visitors can step inside this nationally registered cultural property and discover the story of Noshiro, once known throughout Japan as the City of Wood.

A Historic Ryotei

Kaneyu was founded in 1890 as a traditional ryotei. The current building was completed in 1937, during the height of Noshiro’s prosperous timber industry.

For many decades, it served as an elegant venue for banquets, celebrations, and business gatherings, welcoming merchants and distinguished guests from across Japan.

After closing as a restaurant in 2008, the building was carefully restored and reopened as a cultural and tourism facility in 2013, allowing visitors to experience this important piece of local history.

Architecture Built with Natural Akita Cedar

Kaneyu is celebrated as one of the finest examples of traditional wooden architecture in Akita.

Throughout the building, visitors will find beautiful natural Akita cedar alongside other carefully selected woods, including Japanese cypress, pine, zelkova, and painted maple. Every pillar, beam, ceiling, and decorative detail reflects the remarkable skill of Japanese craftsmen, who carefully selected each piece of timber to enhance its natural character.

Rather than displaying luxury alone, the building demonstrates the artistry and techniques that made Noshiro famous as one of Japan’s leading timber towns.

The Grand Hall

The building’s most impressive space is its magnificent 110-tatami Grand Hall.

Its advanced roof structure creates a remarkably open interior with very few supporting pillars, while the coffered ceiling showcases beautiful natural Akita cedar, including timber from trees more than 260 years old.

Each room has its own unique design, featuring beautifully crafted alcoves, sliding doors, carved transoms, and carefully selected wooden pillars. Walking through the building reveals the diversity and sophistication of traditional Japanese interior design.
