Experience One of Akita’s Biggest Fireworks Festivals by the Sea
Noshiro Fireworks Festival 2026: A Spectacular Summer Event Near Shirakami-Sanchi in Akita
Every summer, the city of Noshiro in northern Akita Prefecture lights up with one of Japan’s most spectacular fireworks events — the Noshiro Fireworks Festival. Known locally as Minato Matsuri Noshiro no Hanabi, this large-scale event combines powerful fireworks, seaside scenery, music, and strong community spirit.
Located near the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakami-Sanchi, Noshiro is also an excellent gateway for travelers exploring the natural beauty of northern Akita. The festival offers a unique opportunity to experience both Japan’s vibrant summer culture and the rich nature surrounding the Shirakami Mountains.
In 2026, the festival celebrates its 22nd edition since its revival and will once again attract visitors from across Japan to the Port of Noshiro.

The History of Noshiro Fireworks
The Noshiro Fireworks Festival began in 1958 as part of local reconstruction celebrations. It later became known nationwide for its creative “fantasy fireworks” performances synchronized with music and storytelling.
After a long break, the festival was revived in 2003 through the efforts of local residents and organizations, and it continues today as one of Akita Prefecture’s signature summer events.
Today, the festival is also gaining attention from travelers visiting Shirakami-Sanchi and the northern Akita region, making it one of the area’s most memorable summer attractions.
A Community-Supported Festival
One of the most special aspects of the Noshiro Fireworks Festival is its strong local support.
High school students, local companies, and community volunteers help prepare the venue, set up seating areas, and clean the site after the event. Thanks to these efforts, the festival has become more than just a fireworks show — it is a community celebration supported by the people of Noshiro.
The cleanup activities on the following morning are also carried out with the help of local residents and businesses, reflecting the pride and hospitality of the region.
