Michi-no-Eki Hachimori | Famous Spring Water Stop Near Shirakami Sanchi

Located along Route 101 near the border of Akita and Aomori, Michi-no-Eki Hachimori is a popular roadside stop for travelers exploring the Shirakami Sanchi area and the scenic Sea of Japan coastline.

The station is best known for “Otonomizu,” a natural spring water source fed by underground water from the Shirakami Mountains. Just outside the facility, visitors can freely collect fresh spring water from a small water pavilion resembling a traditional shrine purification basin.

According to local legend, a feudal lord from the Tsugaru domain once stopped here during his journey and praised the water by saying, “This is truly sweet and pure.” The spring later became known as “Otonomizu,” meaning “The Lord’s Water.”

Today, many travelers stop to refill bottles, enjoy the refreshing water, and take a break during coastal drives through northern Akita.

Inside the station, visitors can browse local souvenirs, regional sweets, and seafood products from Happo Town and the surrounding Shirakami area. Free Wi-Fi is also available, making it a convenient roadside rest stop for self-drive travelers.

The on-site restaurant, Toge no Chaya Otonomizu, serves local specialties including Otonomizu Ramen and fried pufferfish, offering a taste of the Sea of Japan region.
