What is Kumiko?

Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that creates intricate geometric patterns without using nails. Thin pieces of wood are precisely assembled to form elegant latticework that has decorated Japanese doors, windows, and interiors since ancient times.

During this workshop, you’ll assemble carefully crafted wooden components prepared by skilled artisans, allowing beginners to experience the beauty and precision of this traditional craft while creating a piece to take home.

The materials are produced by a respected local woodworking company that continues to preserve traditional techniques while contributing to modern architectural projects across Japan.

Step Inside Former Ryotei Kaneyu

Before your workshop, enjoy a guided visit to Former Ryotei Kaneyu, the architectural symbol of Noshiro’s prosperous timber era.

Founded in 1890, Kaneyu welcomed distinguished guests for banquets, celebrations, and official gatherings. The current building, completed in 1937, is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property and showcases exceptional craftsmanship using locally sourced Akita cedar.

As you walk through its elegant rooms, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for why Noshiro earned the nickname The City of Wood.

A Sweet Taste of Local History

Every participant receives a box of Pocket Okina Ame (8 pieces) to take home.

Okina Ame is a traditional confection with a history spanning more than 400 years. Made from glutinous rice and barley malt, it has a soft, mochi-like texture and a gentle natural sweetness. Beloved both locally and across Japan, it remains one of Noshiro’s signature specialties.
