Sacred Forest and Giant Akita Cedar Trees in Noshiro
Nanakura Mountain is a scenic mountain area in the Futatsui district of Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture. Located beside the Yoneshiro River, the mountain is known for its giant natural Akita cedar trees, quiet forest scenery, and deep connection to local legends and mountain worship traditions.
The name “Nanakura” comes from the mountain’s seven peaks, which rise along the river valley across from the famous Kimimachizaka area. For centuries, the mountain has been regarded as a sacred place by local communities, and the surrounding forests were once connected to traditional mountain worship practices.
Today, visitors come to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and towering natural cedar trees that represent the rich forests of northern Akita. In recent years, a short wooden walkway was added near the roadside forest area, making it easier to access several giant cedar trees without a long hike. The walkway offers a casual way to experience old-growth forest scenery while traveling through the Futatsui area.
The nearby Yoneshiro River is also popular for outdoor activities such as canoeing, allowing visitors to enjoy the landscape from the water as well as the forest trails nearby.
Because of its convenient location, Nanakura Mountain can easily be visited together with nearby attractions such as Kimimachizaka and Michi-no-Eki Futatsui, a roadside station with local food, souvenirs, and tourist information.
