A Nature-Lover’s Duo in Akita: Hike with an Akita Dog & Make Miso-Grilled Rice Sticks

Ever dreamed of exploring the great outdoors of Akita with an Akita dog by your side?

This unique experience invites you to go on a scenic hike with Masa, a beloved local Akita dog, as your charming guide. Your destination: Mt. Ishikura in Mitane Town—a peaceful mountain rich in natural beauty and fresh air. As you follow forest trails alongside Masa, you’ll take in sweeping views and enjoy the calming presence of nature all around.

Masa, the Akita dog guide, is a friendly pro with years of experience leading guests through the trails.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of the Oga Peninsula and the Shirakami Sanchi. Visiting in mid to late October is highly recommended, when the entire mountain is painted in vibrant autumn colors, creating a stunning, picturesque scene that feels like stepping into an autumnal forest poem.

The summit offers breathtaking views of the Oga Peninsula.

After bidding a heartfelt farewell to Masa, the experience continues with another highlight — a hands-on cooking session with local residents of Mitane Town to make Akita’s traditional dish, miso-grilled rice sticks (Kiritanpo). From shaping the rice, slowly grilling it over charcoal, to finally enjoying it dipped in specially made local miso, every step is done by your own hands. This is a rich cultural experience that engages all five senses.

Creating grilled rice sticks from the very beginning offers a unique hands-on experience.

Whether you’re a nature lover or curious about local culture, this special journey combining Akita dogs, mountain hiking, and traditional cuisine is an experience not to be missed.
