Get out of your house with a weekend at one of these campsites in the Akita Shirakami area:

Subari Campsite

Tucked away in Fujisato Town, arriving at Subari Campsite feels like stumbling upon a hidden oasis. The campsite offers great views of the reservoir that sustains the homes and farms of the Akita Shirakami area (Noshiro, Fujisato, Mitane, Happo) and its surrounding cliffs. At night, this is the perfect place for stargazing.

There is a garden golf ground, playground, and small educational facility next to the camping area. Parking, restrooms, and a grilling area are available on-site. It’s located about 30 minutes from Futatsui Station by car, and about 15 minutes from the nearest grocery store.

It is 600 yen per tent and you may pay before 4 p.m. at the building across from the playground. If you arrive after 4 p.m. feel free to pay in the morning. The open campground is first come first serve, find a spot and start pitching! (Free wifi is also now available throughout the campsite.)

**Update: Due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases, Subari Campground is currently not accepting guests from Akita City and those from outside of the prefecture. Licenses will be checked during registration.

Goshonodai Campsite

A contrast to Subari’s rustic landscape, Goshonodai is located in Happo Town on the Sea of Japan coastline along route 101. Here you can soak in the ocean view baths of Hatahata kan next door and then fall asleep to the sound of waves. Tents and barbecue sets may be rented (prices below). Parking and restrooms are available on-site.

Free sites cost 1,000 yen (per tent), and car-park sites (30 available) are 3,000 yen per site.

Rental Fees:
Tent — 1,000 yen/night
Sleeping bag — 300 yen/night
Blanket — 300 yen/day
BBQ set — 300 yen/each time
Cooler — 100 yen/each time

※Check-in is from 2-5 p.m. and check-out is by 1 p.m. Please make reservations in advance through the Happo Tourism Association (here).

Goshonodai is a 5-minute walk from JR Shirakami Station and about 40-minutes from the Noshiro-Minami IC exit and Noshiro-Higashi IC exit.
