Categories:   Nature/Lifestyle, Things to Do, Must do
The Shirakami area offers endless hiking options for those wanting to explore Akita’s great outdoors. From beginner-level paths to advanced, rugged trails, visitors can choose from a variety of hikes that fit their ability and schedule. Although all trails are marked, hiring guides is recommended.
Mt. Futatsumori — Beginners’ Level
This hike is convenient for those traveling along Akita’s coast on Route 101 who want to experience the nature of the Shirakami Sanchi World Natural Heritage Site. With an altitude of 1,087 meters above sea level, Mt. Futatsumori offers spectacular views of surrounding mountains such as, Mt. Shirakami, Mt. Mukai-Shirakami, and Mt. Kodake. The peak can be reached in 40 minutes, making it a good choice for tight schedules.
The trailhead is located at the end of Seshurin Road. Parking and bathrooms are also available at the trailhead.
Mt. Fujisato-Komagatake, Kuroishi Hiking Course — Beginners’ Level
This mountain has a peak of 1,158 meters. From the summit, hikers can take in expansive views of the Shirakami Sanchi Natural World Heritage Site, including Mt. Kodake and Mt. Futatsumori. Take the popular Kuroishi hiking course and pass through leafy primeval beech forests and Tanashiro Marsh — famous for its seasonal flowers. It takes two hours to get to the peak.
The Kuroishi course trailhead is located past Dakedai Forest. A parking lot and bathroom facility is available.
Mt. Kodake — Intermediate Level
Tucked away deep in the Shirakami Area, Mt. Kodake is a hike for adventurers. Rising 1,042 meters above sea level, the summit rewards hikers with sweeping views of the Shirakami Sanchi World Natural Heritage Site’s core zone. Getting to the peak takes about 2 hours.
Because the road leading to the trailhead is winding and partly unpaved, going with a guide is recommended. Parking and bathroom facilities are available at the trailhead.
