Goshonodai Park is a scenic hilltop destination in Happo Town, Akita Prefecture, offering sweeping views of the Sea of Japan and the Oga Peninsula.

The park is a beloved local spot for cherry blossom viewing, with around 800 cherry trees—including Somei Yoshino and wild mountain cherry varieties—blooming each spring and drawing many visitors.

In addition to the sea of blossoms, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Sea of Japan from the park, especially during sunset when the scenery becomes even more enchanting.

A popular local spot for cherry blossom viewing

The best time to enjoy cherry blossoms at the park is in mid-April. In addition to daytime viewing, traditional lanterns are lit up in the evening, creating a romantic atmosphere that’s quite different from the daytime scene.

Outside of cherry blossom season, the park offers a variety of facilities such as playground equipment, electric carts, walking trails, tennis courts, and mini golf. It’s an ideal spot for family outings and fun with children.

Explore the surrounding area

In addition to strolling, cherry blossom viewing, picnicking, or camping in the park, there are plenty of sightseeing options nearby. Just across from the park is Yamamoto Hatahata-kan, a popular hot spring facility. It’s highly recommended to relax in their day-use onsen after enjoying the blossoms.

If you’re visiting around lunchtime, there are two well-loved local restaurants nearby. One is Driver Restaurant Umi, a cozy eatery serving classic Japanese set meals, and the other is Rest House Ikoi no Lodge, known for its delicious seafood teishoku (set meals). Both are great spots to enjoy a satisfying local meal.

Additionally, Goshonodai Park is very close to JR Akita-Shirakami Station, just a five-minute walk away, so purchasing a JR East Pass in advance is highly recommended.

After enjoying the cherry blossoms, you can take the sightseeing train RESORT Shirakami to continue your journey to Noshiro City, Akita City, or in the opposite direction to Aomori and Hirosaki for more exciting experiences.
