Picking junsai (water shield)

What is junsai?

Junsai with dressing.

Junsai is a traditional water vegetable. Coated in a slippery, gelatinous substance, they grow in big, shallow ponds.

Containing large amounts of fiber, junsai is considered to be good for health and beauty. Its soft flavor makes it a versatile ingredient, used in a variety of dishes and even as an ice cream topping.

What is junsai harvesting?

Participants ride small boats and pick junsai by hand in the calm waters—an easy and beginner-friendly activity. You’ll feel the unique smooth, jelly-like texture with every pick, making it a refreshing and fun experience.

After harvesting, you can either take the junsai home as a local souvenir or have it freshly prepared by the farmers on-site. Its jelly-like texture is unlike anything else—truly a one-of-a-kind taste!
