Shirakami Sake
Categories:   Traditional, Eats/Treats
Across Japan, Akita Prefecture is known for its delicious rice and Japanese sake. Taste the smooth sakes of the Shirakami area, made with the pure waters of World Heritage Site Shirakami Sanchi. The brands below can be enjoyed at a variety of restaurants and bars in the area, and can be bought at Tenyo Sake Shop in Noshiro City (information at bottom of page) which is a 20-minute walk from Noshiro Station.
YAMAMOTO Brewery, Happo Town
Made with fresh shirakami water, this local sake brewery produces a special yearly sake. Try their most popular label at Tenyo Sake Shop — Pure Black, an easy-to-drink, refreshing option.
YAMAMOTO Brewery does not accept general visitors for brewery tours. However, guests staying at “YADO YAMAMOTO” a lodging facility managed by the same company, can enjoy a special brewery tour.
The brewery also features an attached cafe, “LABO & CAFE YAMAMOTO.” Here, you can indulge in sweets and light meals, including sake that can only be enjoyed at this cafe, and Pierre Hermé macarons – said to be the only place in Tohoku where they are available.
