Like many other places in Japan, this year’s winter in the Akita Shirakami area has been mild with very little snow. Unfortunately, this may affect scheduled winter events in the area.

We’re crossing our fingers in hopes that the next couple of weeks will bring colder weather and more snowfall! Some events to look out for next month (weather permitting):

Fujisato Town’s Annual KETSUJORI Sledding

Date: Sat. Feb 1
Time: 10:00 AM ~ (Check-in between 10:00~10:30)
Cost: 1,000 yen

Get your sleds (in this case, fertilizer bags) ready! In this annual Fujisato event, participants take turns sledding down the ramp to be judged on distance and jump form. Hang out with locals, and enjoy warming up with soup during the break. Registration can be done by emailing: kankou@town.fujisato.akita.jp Make sure to include your name, age, gender, address, and phone number.

Mitane Town’s Snowmobile & Banana Boat 2020

Date: Sun. Feb 2
Time: 10:00 ~ 12:00 (Check in 9:30)
13:30 ~ 15:30 (Check in 13:30)
Place: Moritake Golf Course
Cost: Adults 2,000 yen, Children 1,000 yen (price includes tickets, an onsen coupon, and small meal)

Turns out banana boats can be enjoyed on land too! Get pulled around on one, and/or try driving a snowmobile yourself. This memorable activity is fun for all ages! Afterwards, relax and warm your body at the Moritake Onsen Hotel Yuparu nearby.
